General Assistance

What is General Assistance?
The General Assistance Program, often referred to as "GA", is a State mandated, municipally administered assistance program. It is designed as a program of last resort for Sanford/Springvale residents needing help with basic necessities.

Our Goal
The goal of the General Assistance program is to increase self-sufficiency. Each General Assistance recipient must work with the social services worker to develop and sign an Individual Self-Sufficiency Plan (ISP).

How Do We Serve You?
Eligible Sanford/Springvale residents may receive help with basic necessities such as food, rent, electricity, water/sewer, heating fuel, etc., as defined by local ordinance and state statute, M.R.S.A. 22, part 5, Chapter 1161.  Assistance is provided by voucher or by direct payment to a provider (i.e. Central Maine Power or a landlord). Seeking and obtaining employment will be a requirement for all applicants who are able to work.

It should be noted that the General Assistance Program does not provide housing or seek housing for an applicant.  Applicants may apply for financial assistance with their existing housing in Sanford/Springvale or apply for financial assistance with housing they have located and is available to them.
