Sanford Arts Commission

Sanford is currently experiencing an arts resurgence that needs support, promotion, and cultivation. Arts and cultural organizations and events greatly contribute to the city's economic health. Local artists and cultural groups enhance the downtown area, inspire students, and improve residents' quality of life. The City of Sanford encourages and supports the arts to ensure their continued growth. Enhancing the arts and organizing related events brings significant economic benefits and revitalizes the downtown area.

The Commission’s purpose:
  • Inspiring a sense of place and pride in the City of Sanford;
  • Identifying, strengthening, supporting, inspiring, promoting, and broadcasting Sanford’s cultural assets, infrastructure, and artistic treasures;
  • Building and facilitating community involvement in the arts;
  • Recognizing the economic power of the arts and culture in Sanford;
  • Invigorating Sanford with an emphasis on the City's unique history and assets; and
  • Assisting and advising the City on arts and culture matters.
The Commission meets monthly, generally on the fourth Thursday of the month from 9 am to 10:30 am. All meetings are open to the volunteer members and any other interested members of the public.

The Commission comprises a maximum of 12 appointed voting members, sworn in by the City Clerk and chosen by the City Council. While individuals from outside Sanford can serve, a minimum of 2/3 of the members must be eligible to vote in Sanford/Springvale.
